Mkgmap GUI is a free, simple program used to make custom maps for Garmin GPS devices. It gives you a visual window to use mkgmap, which is usually a tool where you have to type in code. Even though the tool is quite old, it still works today because it runs on Java.
However, it only lets you do the most basic tasks, like turning an OpenStreetMap (.osm) file into a Garmin (.img) map file. What the GUI Can Do
The main tool (mkgmap) has hundreds of advanced options. The Mkgmap GUI simplifies this down to just two main actions:
Convert files: It turns .osm map files into .img files that your Garmin watch or GPS can read.
Combine files: It merges multiple small .img map tiles into one big map file called gmapsupp.img. How to Get It Ready
To use the GUI today, you have to download two separate items:
Get the Core Tool: Go to the official OpenStreetMap wiki and download the main mkgmap tool. Unzip it and look for a file named mkgmap.jar.
Get the GUI: Download the mkgmapgui.jar file from The Activity Workshop.
Put Them Together: Keep both of these files in the same folder on your computer so they can find each other. How to Run the GUI Today
Because maps use a lot of data, you cannot just double-click the program. If you do, your computer might run out of memory and crash. You need to give the program extra memory using a special command.
Open your computer’s terminal (or Command Prompt) and type this command: java -Xmx512M -jar mkgmapgui_1.1.jar
Note: The -Xmx512M part tells your computer to give the program 512 megabytes of memory so it can handle the map files. Step-by-Step: Making Your Map Once the window opens, follow these simple steps:
Select the Mkgmap File: Click the first box to choose the mkgmap.jar file you downloaded.
Choose Your Map Files: Click Add to load your OpenStreetMap (.osm) files.
Pick a Map Name: Give your map a specific name and choose where to save it.
Convert: Click the action button to let the program build your new Garmin map file.
Once it finishes, copy your new gmapsupp.img file onto a FAT32-formatted SD card inside a folder named “Garmin”. Put the card into your GPS, and you are ready to hike! If you want to try this out, let me know:
