Multi-Edit Lite (often referred to as MeLite) is a streamlined version of Multi-Edit, a popular, legacy programmer’s text and source code editor. Originally developed by American Cybernetics (later Multi Edit Software) in the MS-DOS era, the “Lite” edition was designed to provide the robust, deep editing capabilities of the standard commercial version but with a shallower learning curve and reduced footprint. Core Features
Multi-Edit Lite served as a powerful productivity tool for programmers and writers during the 1990s and 2000s. Key features include:
Large File Handling & Memory: Designed to open and edit huge text and binary files without system lag, making use of XMS/EMS memory in DOS environments.
Block Editing: Supports stream, line, and column (block) text marking modes, ideal for copying and manipulating code in columns.
Multiple Windows & Files: Allows users to have up to 25 files (and later versions up to 2048 files) open concurrently in a multi-window interface.
Text Processing & Navigation: Includes features like word wrap, text drag-and-drop, powerful regular expression search/replace, and keystroke macros.
Language Support: Offers language-specific formatting, indention, fast commenting, and abbreviations for various coding languages.
Customizability: Highly customizable key mappings, menus, and color schemes. Current Status
Multi-Edit and its Lite variants are essentially legacy software. The commercial MS-DOS versions are no longer supported, and in August 2022, the official Multi Edit Software website and support forums went completely offline.
Downloading/Testing: While the developer is inactive, historical iterations of Multi-Edit Lite can still be found archived on retro software and abandonware hubs such as the Internet Archive Multi-Edit Collection or VETUSWARE DOS Utilities.
